FAQs What is Biodiesel? Is it good for my engine? Can I get it in Sydney? Does the Australian Federal Government tax it (excise)? You'll find these answers below. This section was created to provide answers to your most frequently asked questions. Please browse... |
What is Biodiesel? It may surprise you to know that biodiesel has actually been
around since before petro diesel, or fossil diesel. In fact, the Diesel
engine was originally designed to run on vegetable oils and fuels from
biomass. The processes used in making biodiesel... |
Can I use it in my engine? If you have a diesel engine in your vehicle – yes!
No good for petrol engines, sorry, your only alternatives are Ethanol
(only as an additive to petrol unless your engine is specially
modified), LPG, or CNG (also requires modification).Ask... |
What about performance and economy? This will depend on many factors, but basically, biodiesel
will give about the same performance as fossil diesel. Some varieties
of biodiesel may give slightly less power, or require slightly more
fuel to do the same job and others may give slightly... |
How is it made and where does it come from? Biodiesel can be made from a wide variety of sources. Oil
producing plants including soy, sunflower, canola/rapeseed, coconut
palm, jatropha and even algae
can be used. Animal fats (tallow) and waste cooking oil, are also an
excellent source. There... |
Is it a safe fuel? Biodiesel is far safer than any petroleum based vehicle fuel. It is
less toxic than household table salt! It is easily mixed with petro
diesel, either as a fuel blend, or to aid in cleaning up oil spills. It
is as biodegradable as sugar (up to 98% in 3 weeks)... |
What are the environmental benefits? Many....
Much lower emissions.
Biodiesel burns far cleaner than petro diesel, with about 7% increase
in combustion efficiency. Biodiesel’s exhaust emissions are free from
lead, sulphur dioxide and halogens. It also has reduced particu... |
How can I make it? Please visit our forums for more help or advice with this. A vast resource of help and information is also available on the web to cover this, but here is one good example on the journeytoforever website.
There are also many good books, such as Joshua... |
Where can I buy it? Home enthusiasts.
Currently, the Australian Tax Office has determined that home producers
of biodiesel should pay their excise at 38c/L. This move has caused
nearly all the biodiesel enthusiasts to go underground. This has been
to the detriment of... |
Tax issues. Although the Australian Tax Office
finally now recognises biodiesel as an alternative fuel, with
concessions available to commercial producers, there are good
disincentives in place for the home enthusiast/producer. The ATO
demands that any quantity... |
Where can I find you all? You've got lots of info on biodiesel here, but I'd like to
gain some confidence before running my own vehicle on it. I'd like to talk to
or meet other like minded people who've already taken those first steps.
Where are you all hiding? We've created... |

What is Biodiesel? It may surprise you to know that biodiesel has actually been
