This will depend on many factors, but basically, biodiesel
will give about the same performance as fossil diesel. Some varieties
of biodiesel may give slightly less power, or require slightly more
fuel to do the same job and others may give slightly higher performance
than petro diesel. This will depend on the source of the oil used and
how it has been made. The greater lubricity of biodiesel will also increase the life of your engine by decreasing wear.

Biodiesel can be made from a wide variety of sources. Oil
producing plants including soy, sunflower, canola/rapeseed, coconut
palm, jatropha and even algae
can be used. Animal fats (tallow) and waste cooking oil, are also an
excellent source. There are also new processes being developed that can
extract the oils from almost any organic waste. These oils are
chemically reacted with other substances like methanol and sodium
hydroxide to form biodiesel. Biodiesel can be made by anyone willing to
follow a simple recipe with commonly available ingredients, or can be
made on a commercial scale.

Biodiesel is far safer than any petroleum based vehicle fuel. It is
less toxic than household table salt! It is easily mixed with petro
diesel, either as a fuel blend, or to aid in cleaning up oil spills. It
is as biodegradable as sugar (up to 98% in 3 weeks). It has a much
higher flash point temperature (150° C) than fossil diesel (58° C) and therefore is much safer to store. It also keeps better
than fossil diesel and can be stored for longer. It is also much safer
for your engine to run on biodiesel, as it has a much higher lubricity, which helps to prevent engine wear.
