Dawn of a new day for Biodiesel in Sydney PDF Print E-mail

For the first time ever, we are now actually able to buy clean, renewable biodiesel at a bowser in metropolitan Sydney!
Morris Lyda has now opened up the pumps on his new service station.
Minor issues like the name branding and aesthetics of this old petro-fuels site will be looked at later. More important things, like supplying Sydneysiders with biodiesel (at a competitive price) have thankfully been given priority. The bowsers here will be supplying biodiesel in the following mixes: B100, B50 and B20. At some time in the future, they will also be supplying ethanol.

You can find this station at The Rally Service Centre which is located at:
73 Marrickville Road (corner of Sydney Road), Marrickville, NSW.

Hours of operation are:
Weekdays 7am until 5pm, Saturday morning until 12.30pm. Closed Sunday.

Currently B100 is only being supplied to educated individuals with some experience of the superior cleaning effects that this fuel can have on dirty old diesel engines. How is this being decided? Users of our forum who have read and discussed these matters will be allowed to buy B100, but members of the public will be restricted to lower blends. Educate yourself , register in the forum (its free) and come and support this great new venture.

Please read our other announcements on this news here and here , or visit our forum for up to date news, current rates and general discussion on Australian Biodiesel and our first Sydney metro biodiesel filling station.

Alias in forum: IMA69R

Location: Ryde

Vehicle: 1991 Toyota (GXL 5 Speed) Landcruiser (With 170 Litre "Auxiliary Tank") with after market Cruise Control.
265+ Litre Fuel Capacity = 1,800 + Km. (Highway) fuel range.

Interest in Biodiesel:

I like the environmental aspect of; recycling, as opposed to just taking mineral fuels out of the ground.
I found (when using Biodiesel) my car performed better. I became a "convert" then.
I had noticeably:

  • MORE POWER/TORQUE/EFFICIENCY from my (smoother/quieter) motor;
  • BETTER Fuel Consumption, and therefore, greater fuel range;
  • LESS Exhaust smoke/soot. No longer "smoking" under load up hills (like a shuttle launch);
  • And, to top it off, my exhaust "smelled like a BBQ" !

Used Biodiesel for:

My Brother introduced to Biodiesel, some years ago, when it used to be on sale up at Hexham.
It was on sale at a service station, near the Hexham Bridge (north of Newcastle), and at that time, Biodiesel cost around 20 cents/Litre LESS than normal Diesel, in Sydney.
As my car holds 265+ litres (fully fuelled). PLUS I bought 15x 20 Litre Gerry Cans to take along, totalling 500+ Litres per fill!

To me, the savings are obvious.
Buying 500+ litres of Biodiesel in Newcastle (back then), was cheaper than the same amount of mineral diesel purchased locally.

Besides, my brother lives on the central coast, so I would make a weekend trip to visit him, then we would both go to fuel my car together (It's a MALE thing).

Other comments:

BIODIESEL is the future !

A reusable energy source, that (like Beer), you can make for yourself, at home.

In my view; it can't get any better than that!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Sydney’s first retail outlet for Biodiesel will be open starting this Saturday, 21JAN05.

Currently, the fuel pumps for B100 and B20 are not functioning properly, but B50 is good as gold, calibrated & certified.

Please come by the “Rally Service Centre” @ 73-81 Marrickville Road (Corner of Sydney and Marrickville) between the hours of 08.00 & 12.00 and grab a tank of B-50.  It is possible we might have the B20 open by then, but it is hard to tell at this point.  The price for B-50 will be $1.24.  That is a good price considering the median price for diesel today is $ 1.29.

If you have any questions or need verification of opening times; call Rally Service Centre @ 9557-3235, or me at 0404-149-453.

I look forward to seeing you there,

Best regards, Morris Lyda

Finally, the answer to “Where do I get biodiesel in Sydney”:

Ex-Texan, Morris Lyda, is starting a new venture to fulfill a desire he developed when he was the Technical Director for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Sydney Olympics.  The desire was to positively impact the environment, the economy, and the Australian marketplace. Currently, consumers have no choice with the fuel, nor the retail products offered at most Sydney stations. Lyda strongly believes, given the choice, Australian consumers will buy ethically, environmentally, and Australian, as long as the price is competitive.  “How can a country grow when a majority of the products sold contribute to environmental decay, increased foreign profits, and minimize the Australian producer’s input?  Australia needs national and renewable choices, not foreign petroleum and ownership.” Morris Lyda is determined to offer that choice to the consumers of Sydney; ethical, ecological, and Australian. Sounds like a breath of fresh air, certainly fresher with less CO2, smog and sulphur.

The Green Station will be getting its first batch of biodiesel delivered from Australian Biodiesel Group within a week.  The underground tanks will be thoroughly washed out with nature’s non-toxic solvent (Biodiesel) before being refilled. A load of B100 will be used to fill each tank, then pumped out of the tank and sent back to ABG for re-processing. This will ensure that the first batch of fuel that comes from the pump will be clean.

There will be a 5,000L tank with B100, a 12,000L tank with B50, a 12,000L tank with B20 and 30,000L with E10 (petrol with 10% ethanol). Quantities may be changed later once market demand has been better established.

Once the initial trial is completed, the currently underutilized station (as pictured) will be revamped and re-branded with a green image. The adjoining automotive workshop, behind the bowsers, will continue to operate.  Currently branded as a “G” Station & “Rally Service Center”, Lyda is undecided on the eventual branding, but believes, if the market is there, he will swiftly move into a new name and look.

We could wait for the government or corporations to get biodiesel to the marketplace, or people like Morris can make it happen. This is an exciting development for biodiesel in Sydney, and hopefully, merely the first of many more to come.  Exact opening dates will be posted here as soon as they are available.
