Dublin May Quench Bus Fuel Thirst with Vegoil
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IRELAND: September 12, 2005
DUBLIN - Dublin's public transport company is mulling plans to run its fleet
on vegetable oil in a bid to stave off the impact of soaring oil prices, it
said on Friday.
Dublin Bus, which operates more than 1,000 vehicles in the Irish capital,
said it would test the viability of converting its fleet to run on
alternative fuels, including bio-diesel, a blend of vegetable oils and
animal fats, over the coming months.
Fuel costs had jumped by 40 percent this year compared to 2004, it said. The
company's annual fuel requirement is around 25,000 tonnes.
"Such alternatives are now receiving renewed attention in the light of
rising oil prices," the company said. Oil prices rose above $65 a barrel on
Friday, down 8 percent on a record high of $70.85 last week.
