***UPDATE - for those of you still finding this article, much has changed since this was posted and other easier and cheaper methods of buying biodiesel now exist. Please visit our forum for more up to date information.***

Biodiesel Tanker on site at Waterway Fuels in Rozelle, SydneyI’ve had a chat to Rick @ Waterway Fuels yesterday.

Waterway Fuels is the company that has been set up to distribute biodiesel via Waterway Constructions.

While our group was told earlier that there would be distribution available to the general public from Rozelle by the end of the month, this may have been a little optimistic and given without proper thought to all the logistical and legal issues that need to be solved first.

Rick, who is championing this, has filled me in on some of the details. As you may appreciate, his site is not currently set up like a service station and there are many issues that would prevent queues of the general public turning up and queuing in the yard. Additionally, there are still processes that need to be implemented to ensure fuel that is stored and dispensed meets Australian Standards. I won’t go on with all the issues here, (perhaps Rick might discuss some of those in the forum with you), but there is still hope.

While there are many considerations and hurdles yet to be overcome for proper, guaranteed public distribution, Rick recognises and appreciates that there are a bunch of enthusiasts such as ourselves who are just dying to get our hands on a tank full or two to try it out. If we could gather our group together and internally arrange for storage of some drums and some hand pumps, he would happily sell us some of his fuel on a trial basis.

The terms of this trial would essentially be “all care, no responsibility”. As there are (as yet) no official standards compliance, nor any legal protections, we have only the past good track record of this fuel in the current Waterway Construction fleet, plus a chemical analysis report from the supplier of the fuel stating that it meets Australian Standards (note, this is not, as far as I know an officially government endorsed report). Fuel would be paid for and signed off to a single person and collection, storage and distribution would then be entirely up to our group.

If we can sort out our own logistics internally, we can make this happen. Please discuss this in the forum if you have any ideas, suggestions, or would simply like to register your desire to be a part of this. We will coordinate all of this through our forum.  We need to collect ourselves together and decide how we'll do this - and soon!

Let’s make it happen shall we?
